I like this book a lot! It starts off letting you know what's going on and then it veers into directions you won't expect. I like the constant surprise of what's going on and find it to be unpredictable. I like the school and wish I had gone to one like it myself when I was kid. It's a fun read and my 10 year old really likes it too. Of course, in real life a kid probably would not get sent to reform school for throwing an apple and accidentally killing his teacher, but since it's a kid's book I try not over-analyze the scenarios and just enjoy the story.

My 11 yr old read this book and thought it was good. He was constantly laughing while reading this book.
Wow a great book AMAZING ending engaging characters and in general just a superb book. I think this book is probably best for kids in grades 4 through 7, but older kids might want to read it just because it's enjoyable. Probably my favorite part of the book was the memorable characters (Lemon was my personal favorite). Overall, I just love this book. Seriously I just can't stop raving about it!!
I really enjoyed this book. Knowing the author, I purchased this book to support her in her writing, and all I can say is I was pleasantly surprised by the dark humor and wit. Boys 10 and up will love this book.!
This is by far my favorite book. Its sequels (Watch Your Step (Watch Your Step (Merits of Mischief) and A World of Trouble (Merits of Mischief)) are beautifully written to finish off this amazing book. Hilarious, suspenseful, and quite adventurous, Burns is amazing at keeping the reader engaged!
This was a very entertaining book that my son loved! I read everything he reads and I couldn't even put it down! Can't wait to read the second one!
After a substitute teacher inadvertently kills his enjoyment of "Fish Stick Tuesday" by prudishly sticking to the rules, Seamus Hinkle inadvertently kills her when he throws an apple during a lunch-time food fight, branding him a "bad apple" and prompting his parents to send him to the Kilter Academy. Get it? Kilter=Killed her. But life is not what Seamus expected at Kilter. Seamus was expecting the severity and punishment of a reform school. Instead he finds out is that at Kilter, Demerits, earned by pulling successful pranks, are not only respected but desirable and have a point value that works like money in the Commissary, a place to buy prank making aids and devices. While Gold Stars, earned by doing conventionally admirable deeds, are undesirable because they reduce your demerit values and status. Seamus, who is a good kid who loves his parents and is loyal and kind to his friends, and is actually ashamed of what he accidentally did to the substitute teacher, unexpectedly finds himself with Star Status as Kilter's first killer, a description that horrifies him and he wishes wasn't true, much less wants anyone to know about. It sounds like a darker premise for a story and would be if Seamus wasn't such a good-hearted kid with an unexpected talent for making trouble. The Kilter Academy is for Troublemakers, alright, but rather than stopping their behavior it's meant to hone their trouble-making skills.
This was an unexpectedly funny and enjoyable read, although the reason for the existence of the Academy, revealed at the near end, is just a tad dark and sad. And the end itself isn't really an end, it's clearly an opening for a series, and I already have to know what happens next and where things go from there. Seamus remains admirable as both a good person and a troublemaker throughout. I liked it enough to turn around and buy a copy for my 11-year-old nephew, who is also a good-hearted, good kid who sometimes is punished for things because "his parents just don't understand how he feels." He's more of an outdoors with his friends than an indoors reading kind of kid, so I'll have to see how he likes it.
Witty, original, and fun to read. The young people I read it to (11 to 14 year old boys) absolutely loved it. Solid character development, and interesting plot twists. It combines the absurd and the surreal in a way that almost seems plausible. A true gem of a book.
I read it when I was younger and didn't notice the irony in some of the book I find it funny now and will never forget it. I would recommend this book to any one with a little mischief in their blood.
